When I began this collection, it was really important to me that I make jewelry with meaning. I create my medallions by first sketching out my ideas, researching and writing what I want to convey. This process takes the most time, and if I have reached deep enough in my expression, I feel it.
Once I am happy with the concept, I start designing them and re-drawing them on my computer. Then when I am happy with this process, I send my computer file to a die maker.
When I have my die, more fun starts! I start with a blank disc of 925 silver and place them individually in the die. The disc is then struck with 30 tons of pressure! Each one turns out just a little different from the other.
I picked the name Heila (Hay-la) for my collection because it is an old Norse word meaning heal, hale, and whole.
When we say hello, it comes from the word hale. Also very cute; In Finnish, Heila translates to boyfriend, girlfriend, or valentine.
